Peddapalli: A summer day for a swimming lesson to a village tank led by a grandfather, turned tragic with three of his grandkids as well as the 70-year-old grandfather, drowning in the Kolanur village tank in Peddapalli district on Saturday evening.

The deceased were identified as Sathuri Rajaiah (70), Sathuri Aadarsh (17), Sathuri Siddarth (14) and Chatla Littu (10). Adarsh and Siddharth were the children of Rajaiah’s son while Littu was a relative of the family. The children were in Kolanur village to spend a few days of their summer holidays with the grandfather and other relatives in the village, the police said.

Aadarsh and Siddarth lived with their parents in Godavarikhani, and Littu lived with his parents in Goureddypet.

According to the police, Rajaiah took the children to the village tank to teach them how to swim on Saturday evening. Within minutes of the lesson, it is believed that the three boys got scared and clung on to their grandfather resulting in all four of them drowning.

As soon as information about the drowning was received, the police rushed to the tank and began making efforts to retrieve the bodies of the dead. While they could manage to get Rajaiah and Siddarth’s bodies, the failing light in the evening made it difficult to find the bodies of Aadarsh and Littu. Efforts were on to retrieve them till late into Saturday evening.
