Hyderabad: Rising mercury levels bring a frown to most people’s face, but there are some in the city, who look at the hot sun with a smile on their faces. For them, the scorching heat means more business.
Vendors of fruits and fruit juices, tender coconut, lassi and their ilk are already smiling, as the temperatures have begun the summer ascent in the city.
The demand for tender coconut water, lemon soda, fruit juices such as watermelons and muskmelons have all gone up.
Tender coconut vendors are the ones who are the most happy, with the prices already soaring. A jump by Rs 5 has already been registered, with what used to come for Rs 15 already being charged Rs 20, while the size determines the maximum price, which has gone up from Rs 25 to Rs 30.
Mohammed Rafi, a vendor in SR Nagar said the onset of summer had fuelled the demand for tender coconuts, which had boosted their sales and caused the prices to shoot up. The price increase was also due to rising transportation costs, he said.
“These coconuts have been transported from various parts of coastal Andhra and some vendors order them even from Bengaluru. Last month, I hardly sold 100 pieces daily. Now, the sales have picked up and I am selling over 200 coconuts every day,” said Rafi.
This apart local markets, Rythu Bazaars and roadside stalls are seeing customers in large numbers seeking watermelons and muskmelons. Watermelons are getting sold in the price range of Rs 30 to Rs 100 while a muskmelon goes at a cost of Rs 30 per kg across the city.
Vendors said that customers were now switching to natural refreshments from cool drinks to beat the heat. The sales are likely to pick up, as the summer intensifies, with the period between March and May being crucial for their business.
