Hyderabad: Four days after the mob lynching case in the old city here, the South Zone police and the Task Force on Tuesday arrested 14 persons, including a juvenile, in connection with the case.
Four cross-dressed beggars were attacked by a mob at Hafeez Baba Nagar in Chandrayangutta late on Saturday night following rumours of child kidnap gangs. One person P Chandraiah, 52, from Devarakadra in Mahbubnagar was killed on the spot and two others Swamy and Narasimha were injured.
The arrested persons are Mohammed Sohail,19, a lorry cleaner; Mohammed Muqtar,21, a decorator; Hani Bin Haid, 60, a fruit vendor; Shaik Mahmood Bin Ahmed Fazil Ahmed, 19, a student; Hussain Saadi, 26, a travel agent; Mohammed Rafi, 29, a mechanic; Mohammed Sirajuddin, 26; Syed Ashraf Moinuddin, 18, a student; Mohammed Sumair, 20, a student; Mohammed Akram Ali,30, a catering worker; Sarfaraz Khan,19, a student; Abdullah Bin Sultan Lahaji, 50, a driver; and Mohammed Basheer, 34, a plumber.
According to the police, when the beggars came to Ajeem Hotel seeking alms, Hussain and Rafiq saw them and suspected them to be members of the child kidnap gang, about which messages were being circulated in social media and suddenly started beating them. The beggars escaped from there towards Sunny Gardens, but were chased by a mob.
“At the gardens, nearly 300 persons gathered and attacked Chandraiah and Swamy with boulders leading to the former’s death. In this case, about 35 persons were taken into custody for questioning, out of which 14 were arrested and produced before court,” said V Satyanarayana, DCP, South Zone adding that they were identified with the help of CCTVs, phone recordings of locals and the police teams.
Based on further investigation, the police also arrested two vernacular reporters Saleem and Subhan for posting fake news which is believed to have led to the incident. Efforts are on to nab the other suspects.
