Hyderabad: Mystery shrouds the discovery of several silver and copper vessels, bangles, large anklets and other articles from an agricultural well at Ramireddpalle village of Parigi mandal in Vikarabad district on Wednesday.
Twenty-five coins were also reportedly found in the traditional vessels with a goldsmith now being roped in to verify whether the ornaments were gold or silver and if possible, the age of the articles as well. The discovery, which already has stories flying around that it was a hidden treasure trove, was made by the land owner Siddiqui, a farmer, while he was digging the soil in his well to use it for his house construction.
On coming to know about the discovery, the police reached the field to inspect the articles and later handed over the same to Revenue Department officials for detailed verification. As news of the discovery spread, scores of villagers rushed to the field to have a glimpse.
Parigi Mandal Revenue Officer (MRO) N Vidhyasagar Reddy said Siddique was carrying out digging works in his well using an earthmover when he first found the copper and brass vessels, supposedly used for drinking water. As the digging continued, silver bangles, anklets, a ring and other articles were found.
“We are examining the articles that were found in Siddique’s well with the help of a goldsmith. There is no date and year on the articles,” he said.
The articles will be handed over to the District Collector for further examination with the help of the Archaeology Department.
“As of now, we have no clue on how these articles reached the well or whether they are antique or valuable,” Reddy said, adding that efforts were on to collect more details from Siddique and other workers who were engaged in the digging.
