AirPods are the bestselling wireless earbuds, don’t you agree? In the city, you cannot walk a kilometer without spotting people using the iconic earbuds. But even though Apple promised to show us a wireless future, the truth is that AirPods are just average. This is mainly because the sound quality isn’t any better than the earbuds Apple includes for free! Therefore, the question that arises that why pay an extra twenty thousand when there are earbuds of lesser price range, claiming to be just as good. Just because they’ve got that iconic stamp, doesn’t mean they’re the best.
AirPods integrates seamlessly with other Apple products as the H1 chip pairs instantly and seems to have less interference as compared to other wireless earbuds. Features like taking out an AirPod to pause your music or audio sharing are highly useful. The biggest downside is that their sound quality is just satisfactory. Due to their open design, sound isolation is terrible. The noise cancellation isn’t so effective, so get ready to have car honks and chatters of people accompanied with your playlist.
You might think you can put up with the sound quality, but there’s one issue that you can’t avoid, that is the Battery Life. On paper, 4.5 hours on a single charge sounds great but we’ve seen numerous reports and complaints regarding the decreased battery capacity.
“The battery life of my AirPods have gone down so much that now they only last about 45 minutes on a single charge, ” says Anjana, a student from St Francis College for Women, who has been using AirPods since 2016.
When we compared AirPods from 2016 to a new pair from 2018, we found that after an hour of listening, the older pair had relatively less battery percentage in each bud as compared to the newer pair. Just in case you’re using an older model, Apple offers a special battery and repair service, which would cost around Rs 3,000 to Rs 4,000. And the same, if your charging cases are having battery issues.
Moreover, unlike competing earbuds, AirPods have no water resistance. And as a result, even if your battery still holds charge, you might have to replace them, if you get caught in the rain.
On the plus side, Apple does focus on recycling and has a specific section devoted to it too, wherein you can send in your AirPods and get them recycled. As great as this sounds, most people don’t know that this policy exists or even if they know, they won’t bother to do it, making AirPods sit for years in your old drawer.
Nevertheless, there are two sides to every coin and we cannot deny the fact that AirPods do bring out the suave and sound you need. AirPods are here to stay!
