In the best universities category, OU slipped by five places from last year to 28th rank.

Hyderabad: The rankings of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Ministry of Human Resource Development have come as a major disappointment for Osmania University. The varsity, which was ranked 38th among all higher educational institutions in the country in 2017, was ranked 45th this year with an overall score of 48.02.

The ranking was given based on five parameters including Teaching, Learning and Resources (TLR), Research and Professional Practice (RP), Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity (OI) and Perception.

A closer look into the scoring pattern of the Osmania University on the five parameters reveals it has scored low on Perception i.e. 5.76 out of 100 while it had scored 11.16 last year. The perception parameter includes peer perception of employers and research investors, academics, public and competitiveness.

The overall score has also come down in the outreach and inclusivity category where the varsity got a score of 44.69 as against 58.41 last year. However, in categories like graduation outcomes, RP and TLR, the varsity has improved its scores to 93.35, 25.90 and 55.09 respectively as against 91.98, 20.56 and 46.3 that it scored last year.

In the best universities category too, Osmania has slipped by five places from 23rd last year to 28th in 2018.

“Frequent protests, blockade of roads by students and the Indian Science Congress moving out of the varsity dented the perception of OU among stakeholders. That’s why the score in the perception category has come down whereas in all other parameters it has done well. The varsity will now focus more on promoting its academic and research activity,” an official said.
