Hyderabad: The Hyderabad City Police, as part of its crackdown on Arab contract marriages, busted a major racket and arrested 20 persons here on Wednesday. The arrested persons included five Arabs from Oman and Qatar. Three qazis, including a chief qazi from Mumbai, four lodge owners and five brokers too were held.

Police had identified that the Arabs had come to the city with a budget, seeking brides. They were residing in local lodges and houses of the brokers.

“The Arabs who come here conduct interviews of the women. One girl who was interviewed recently informed the police and expressed her dislike for marrying an old man. But the broker and her family kept pressurizing her,” said M. Mahender Reddy, City Police Commissioner.

The arrested Arabs were identified as Al Mayahi Habib Ali Issa, Al Salhi Talib Humeid Ali, Al Ubaidani Juma Shinoon Sulaiman, Al Salehi Nasser Khalifa Hamed, Al Qasimi Hassan Mohammed from Oman and Omer Mohammed Seraj Abdul Rahman, Hamad Jabir O Al-Kuwari and Safeldin Mohammed Salih from Qatar.

The police also arrested the chief qazi from Mumbai, Farid Ahmed Khan, who had facilitated the marriage of a minor girl from Falaknuma earlier this year. Diplomatic efforts are on to bring back the minor girl and Ahmed Abdullah Amur Al Rahbi, the 80-year-old Omani national who married her.
