The Netflix series, Atypical, is a story about an 18-year-old Sam Gardner, played by Keir Gilchrist, who tries to have a normal experience, encountering many barriers as he searches for love. It is a coming-of-age story directed by Michael Patrick Jann and written by Robia Rashid.
Sam has reached the age where he wants to seek romantic connection but is confused about how to go about it. He has inappropriate feelings for Julia, his therapist, enacted by Amy Okuda, and gets involved with a high-strung classmate, Paige (Jenna Boyd), who has genuine feelings for him but he has no idea how to handle.
The show tries to capture what autism feels like. Each episode of a 30-minute comedy is a journey of self-discovery. The first season consisting of eight episodes, traces Sam’s daily struggles as well as those involving his parents (Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michael Rapaport), his sister (Brigette Lundy-Paine) and his therapist.
