Hyderabad: The first Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge on Thursday sentenced a 32-year-old auto-rickshaw driver to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for sexually violating a 13-year-old girl in Saidabad.
The court also asked the driver, Syed Amjad, to pay a fine of Rs 2,000 and in default of payment, to undergo simple imprisonment for three months. The remand period undergone by Amjad, if any, shall be set off, said Additional Public Prosecutor K Pratap Reddy.
Judge Suneetha Kunchala delivered the verdict. Amjad’s plea was also recorded wherein he stated that he had two children and his wife to take care of. He prayed to the court to take a lenient view while imposing the sentence. However, the court said a lenient view could not be taken against him as the offences committed by him were grave in nature.
As Amjad was convicted for the offence punishable under Section 6 of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the court said the victim had to be compensated for her sufferance both physically and mentally.
Therefore, the matter must be referred to the District Legal Services Authority with a request to decide the quantum of compensation to be awarded to the girl and refer the matter to the District Collector for awarding compensation to the girl at the earliest, the court said.
The girl’s mother had lodged a complaint with the Saidabad police on December 2, 2015 stating she left the house on work leaving her daughter. Amjad had forcibly raped the child by putting a plaster on her mouth. He also threatened the girl with dire consequences if she informed the matter to anyone, and fled. The incident came to light when the girl revealed it to her mother. Amjad was arrested 11 days after the incident at Singareni Colony in Saidabad.
