Sanagreddy: In a rare gesture, employees of Bharat Dynamics Limited-Bhanur (BDL-Bhanur) have gifted a pair of oxen to an elderly Lambada couple in Mahabubabad district on Monday by spending Rs 1.24 lakh. A photograph of the couple- Banoth Setyaram and Durgi- crying at the carcasses of their oxen went viral in social networking sites on July 20 as they were electrocuted while the farmer was heading back home after tilling his land on July 19.

One of the oxen came in touch with a live electric wire accidentally at an agriculture borewell. Setya and Durgi, who live on cultivating a piece of land at Bastaram Tanda in Narsimhulagudem village of Mahabubabad district, have lost the only source of earning their livelihood with the death of the two oxen. Arikepudi Raghu, president of the BDL-Bhanur employees who also founded Winners Foundation mobilised funds from the foundation members by explaining the plight of the farmers couple.

Raghu, who sought the help of Rudroju Tejaswini, a former apprentice at BDL-Bhanur, to reach out to the couple and buy the oxen in a nearby village. Tejaswini and her friends have also donated Rs 3,000 to the couple. Setyaram and Durgi have thanked the BDL employees with folded hands for their gesture. “It would be very difficult to buy the oxen for us at this moment by spending such a huge amount, ” Setyaram said and added saying that the pair of oxen would help them earn livelihood with respect”.

Speaking to Telangana Today, Arikepudi Raghu has said that they spoke to Setyaram a couple of days after the couple lost the oxen assuring them to present a pair of oxen. Saying that he has posted the pictures and a message to all his colleagues seeking generous donations, the Foundation president said that they have got an overwhelming response from his colleagues.

Meanwhile, Raghu has said that he has sent Tejaswini, who lives in Thorrur village, personally to Bastaram Tanda three days ago to inform the couple that they would present the oxen on Monday. Raghu visited the village and handed over the oxen to them after presenting new clothes to them.
