Be prepared for locust invasion: CS to officials

Hyderabad: In the wake of potential threat of locust swarms invasion in Telangana, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar has directed the district Collectors, SPs and other officials of nine districts that are likely to be affected in case the locusts enter the State, to work proactively in close coordination with neighbouring districts.

As per the directions of Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, the Chief Secretary held a meeting with Collectors of nine districts, SPs, Fire Officers, Agricultural officers and forest officials and instructed them to be in a state of preparedness to deal with the locust attack. He asked them to ensure adequate stock of spraying material, safety kits, lighting arrangements among others. He directed the Agricultural department to prepare an advisory of Standard Operating Procedures to be followed by the districts.

Instructing them to be fully prepared to face any eventuality, Somesh Kumar stressed on the need to have micro level planning for vulnerable villages of bordering districts. “An inventory should be created to identify human resources, material and equipment available in the villages. A village level team should be created and all stake-holders should be involved.
Special officers should be appointed in each mandal,” he said, adding that a district level steering committee should also be constituted. Scientists made a presentation on the movement of the locust swarms and suggested controlling measures.

DGP Mahender Reddy, PCCF Shobha, Agriculture Secretary Janardhan Reddy, Secretary, disaster management Rahul Bojja, Sanjay Jain, DG Fire Services, Dr Praveen Rao, VC, PJTS Agricultural University, Rahman, Chief Entomologist, Sunita, Plant Protection Officer, CIPMC, Collectors and SPs/CPs of Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Adilabad, Nirmal, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Bhadradri Kothagudem Mulugu and Sangareddy districts, officers and senior officials participated in the meeting.
