The 2-km-rally is scheduled to commence at 9 a.m. from Sri Mahaveer Swami Jain Shwetabhar Temple at Feelkhana and reach Exhibition Ground after passing through Osmangunj and Mozamjahi Market.

The birth anniversary of the 24th and the last Tirthankara of the Jains, Vardhman Mahavir, founder of Jainism, is celebrated by the Jain community every year. Born a prince in 599 BC, Mahavir renounced worldly life at the age of 30 and undertook austere penance until he
achieved realisation, the release said.

Members of the Jain community appealed to the government for closure of slaughter houses on the occasion of Mahaveer Jayanthi. They demanded the government to declare Mahaveer Jayanthi as public holiday and also name a street, preferably Ramkote in Hyderabad as Mahaveer Jain Marg or Ahimsa Marg.
