The City of Nizams is quite popular for lip-smacking Hyderabadi Biryani along with architectural grandeurs like Charminar and Chowmahalla Palace. However, that is not all about city, for there is a little more to add to it that includes road-side markets which have a charm of their own.

Whether one is looking for old artefacts and articles, or nostalgic electronic goods or some traditional clothing or second-hand books, Sundays have these exclusive markets springing up in different parts of the city offering goods at quite an affordable price. The throw-away prices are a hit with not only the locals but the tourists too.

Erragadda Sunday Market

The Erragadda road turns into a beehive of activity with traders not only from the city but also from different parts of the country who flock here with a wide and varied merchandise every Sunday.

From a simple knife to handy torchlight and mobiles to first copy garments, electronic items, antique goods and ivory products, the market offers everything. All one needs is patience to browse through products to pick their choices.

The market bustles with customers through the day especially in the evenings. The more than 1 km Erragadda-Sanathnagar stretch also comes alive with a display of old bulb radios, tape decks, pendulum clocks, wholesale clothing, second-hand goods and a host of other items.

Book Bazaar, Abids

When the shutters of shops on the Abids road remain downed on Sundays, the pavements in front of them get lined with the decades-old book bazaar. The bazaar which stretches from Chermas in Abids up to the GPO and Santosh Sapna Theatre is a favourite spot for book lovers to spend a leisurely weekend checking through volumes of titles for their favourite authors and their works.

But, one has to have patience to search through the vast collection that spans genres – from philosophical scribblings to best of fiction, comic to romance and different authors from Ayn Rand to Chetan Bhagat.

Scores of stalls come up with books lined up in the wooden shelves or spread over the pavement and haggling over prices is a common scene. This book lovers’ paradise satisfies you to the core if you are a book worm.

Sunday garments, Paradise

Well-known to be one of the markets for affordable garments in the city, this clothing display at Paradise is the most popular street market destination amongst college students, apart from the locals and also travellers who flock to the place for the best stuff at a very reasonable price.
The lane is lined up with different shops, which sell some trendy clothing items. There is a huge variety of things to choose – from fashionable daily wear, trousers, t-shirts and formals to footwear, belts and wallets. A leisure stroll on this stretch will ensure one does not return home empty-handed but with packs of clothing without having holes in the pocket.
