Hyderabad: The attack on YSR Congress party president YS Jaganmohan Reddy with a knife at the Visakhapatnam International Airport last month has prompted officials at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) in Shamshabad to provide additional security cover to VIPs inside the airport.
Half a dozen armed Quick Reaction Team (QRT) personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) will from now on cover VIPs coming under ‘Z’ and ‘Y’ plus security categories once they arrive at the RGIA.
The QRT will accompany VIPs till they board their flight. At the same time, the QRT personnel will provide security to VIPs soon after they land at the airport and accompany them till they board their bullet-proof vehicles outside the airport.
The decision to enhance security to VIPs was taken at a review meeting convened at the RGIA a few days ago with all the agencies associated with the security arrangements at the airport. Officials discussed in detail about the arrangements to be made for those who come under ‘Z’ and ‘Y’ plus security categories in the wake of the attack on Jaganmohan Reddy.
After discussing a slew of measures, the CISF, which is manning the security of entire airport, came forward to provide a dedicated team to ensure proper security to VIPs at the airport. Right from alighting their vehicle to the VIP lounge and boarding the flight, the QRT team will be with the VIPs.
“As we don’t want to take any chance in the wake of the incident at the airport in Visakhapatnam, we have decided to ensure additional security cover to important leaders,’ a senior official seeking anonymity said. The QRT will swing into action after getting information from the Protocol department and other departments concerned about the arrival of leaders.
The Cyberabad police, under whose jurisdiction the airport comes, are also deploying additional forces during the visit of key leaders. While the Cyberabad police take care of security outside the airport, the CISF mans security inside the airport in coordination with the Intelligence Bureau (IB).
In response to a request made by YSR Congress party leaders after Visakhapatnam airport incident, the State government is providing a bullet-proof vehicle to Jaganmohan Reddy whenever he visits the city.
