Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress alleged that the State government was “making desperate attempts to delay the Panchayat Raj elections scheduled for later this month”.
“The TRS, fearing a humiliating defeat, is trying to cheat Backward Classes in a bid to avoid holding elections to Panchayat Raj institutions,” Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee president N Uttam Kumar Reddy said.
He said Congress was demanding reservation for BCs proportionate to their population. The party would continue its campaign till the community got 52 per cent quota in the Panchayat Raj polls. He also said Congress had nothing to do with the case filed in High Court against crossing of the 50 per cent reservation ceiling.
“But the government is using the High Court’s orders as an excuse to put off the Panchayat Raj elections. It says it will now approach the Supreme Court seeking relief for a flawed PR Act, which deprives BCs of their deserved share. Our party is clear that BCs should get reservations in proportion to their population,” he said.
Reddy, during a live interaction with party workers on social media platform Facebook, also said there were clear indications of early polls at the end of this year and called on Congress cadres to prepare themselves for the same. “All surveys are predicting a landslide victory for Congress in the next elections, whenever they are held,” he said.
