Hyderabad: A resident of Moosarambagh in the city was duped by cyber conmen of Rs. 1.17 lakh after being lured into a trap on the pretext of sending a gift from the United Kingdom.

The victim, John, a resident of Moosarambagh, received a friend request from one Dominic Smith on Facebook, which he accepted. They began chatting and Smith told John that he wanted to send him a parcel containing cash and other items.

A few days ago, John received a phone call from Delhi informing that the parcel had arrived at the cargo section of the Delhi airport. The caller asked him to send money online into a bank account towards some clearance charges.

“John transferred a few thousand rupees into the bank account provided by the caller. He then got another call from a person who introduced himself as an airport official, who told him he cash was found in the parcel and that he could be jailed if he did not pay up more,” said the police. John realised he was being conned after paying Rs.1.17 lakh, after which he approached the Hyderabad Cybercrime Station and lodged a complaint. Investigation is on.
