Visakhapatnam: A Division Bench of the High Court on Tuesday ordered removal of statues set up on the beach road in the city without permission.

The statues of three film personalities who died recently – Dasari Narayana Rao, Nandamuri Harikrishna and Akkineni Nageswara Rao, had suddenly come up on the beach road overnight without the permission of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation. And when the HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao unveiled them, at the behest of former Rajya Sabha member Yarlagadda Lakshmi Prasad, it kicked up a row with the people in the city accusing the GVMC authorities of toeing the TDP rulers in the matter.

This forced the GVMC to issue notices to the concerned but it could not take proper action as the ruling party members were involved in the setting of statues.

However, social activist Bolisetti Satyanarayana filed a case in the High Court and its Division Bench comprising Justice Praveen Kumar, and Justice Satyanarayana Murthy directed the GVMC on Tuesday to remove the statues immediately.
