Visakhapatnam: Diesel Loco Shed-Visakhapatnam is the biggest loco shed in Asia for its holding capacity and for maintenance. To combat the spread of pandemic virus infection, Diesel Loco Shed stood ahead in several inventions like preparation of thousand of liters of hand sanitizer for utilization of staff, Masks, Sanitizing Tunnel, Leg operated (hands free) hand wash booths, sensor based hand sanitizer dispensers etc. Now it has come out with the latest Ultra Violet radiation based disinfection sanitizers for Currency notes, papers and Tools.
“Railways deals with transaction of currency notes at Passenger Reservation Counters, Parcels offices in addition to cashless transactions for hassle free services. There is also a paper transaction in the form of receipts, tickets, files etc. It is the need of the hour to have sanitizers to check the spread of the pandemic COVID-19 infection at various vulnerable locations. To cater to the need, the guidance of Divisional Railway Manager, Waltair Chetan Kumar Shrivastava and monitored by Senior Divisional Mechanical Engineer (Diesel) Santosh Kumar Patro, the fabrication of the UVC sanitizers is done at Diesel Loco Shed, Visakhapatnam with in-house available sources,” Senior Divisional Commercial Manager G. Suneel Kumar said.
This equipment works on the principle of Ultra Violet radiation emitted from a Germicidal UVC lamp that kills up to 99.9% of most viruses, airborne bacteria and mold spores by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA, leaving them unable to perform vital cellular functions. Using this technology DLS, Visakhapatnam fabricated the sanitizers.
Timer Based Currency Sanitizer fabrication has a wooden casing of the sanitizer box, one 4W UVC light is fixed on the roof/top of the box facing downward, one sliding tray is provided in which the currency is put for sanitization, having sliding facility to move in both directions and timer circuit to switch off UVC light after 10 seconds after pressing the push button switch and provided with a green LED which indicates equipment is ready for another operation.
Working of the equipment: A passenger has to place the reservation form and currency notes in the tray, the railway staff pulls the tray into the UVC light provided in the box and presses the push button switch that makes UVC light to glow for 10 seconds along with the buzzer indication. Just after completion of 10 seconds both UVC light and buzzer stops working and the green light will glow indicating sanitization is completed and ready for another operation.
Thereafter, railway staff pulls the tray towards him/her and collects the money and puts the reservation tickets & change, if any, into the tray and repeat the process before pushing it towards the passenger.
This machine can also be used for sanitizing mobile phones, wallets and any other items which fits inside the tray. However, they are required to be sanitized on both sides as their thickness is on the high side.
After going through the successful working of the equipment East Coast Railway appreciated the work of Team DLS and advised for fabrication of 150 such currency sanitizer equipment to be provided at all ticket counters over its jurisdiction. In this connection 24 of currency sanitizer equipment has already been supplied and rest will be completed by July 10.
