A lot of people, especially if they are on a diet, will try to avoid foods that are high in carbohydrates. Many believe that the less you eat, the more likely you are to lose weight – but this is actually a common misconception. Not getting enough carbohydrates can lead to a number of different side effects and according to dietician Susie Burrell, here are the signs you should look out for, if you’re consuming a low carbohydrate intake.

More fatigue

Feeling tired is one of the key signs that you’re not including enough carbohydrates in your diet. Fluctuating blood glucose levels may leave you more prone to headache, inability to concentrate, and also make you feel generally tired. While many might associate eating carbohydrates with the feeling of slackness, avoiding them might have the same result.

Sugar cravings

If you just had a large meal but, you’re still craving something more – especially, something sweet – this could indicate that you have a deficiency in your diet. According to Burell, “regular cravings after a meal may be a sign that your meal does not contain a balance of carbs and proteins that you need for fullness and satisfaction which can result in extreme feelings of hunger.” We all crave sweet things from time to time, but be on the lookout, if this is a daily thing!

Digestive issues

Foods that are high in carbohydrates are also a source of dietary fibre. By not getting enough, you might end up constipated. Therefore, eating carbohydrates is important to help the contents of your tummy run smoothly through your system.
