Efforts to make Hyderabad beggar free by Dec 20

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Prisons Department’s initiative to rehabilitate beggars is in full swing. The drive was earlier kept on hold for a fortnight in view of the visit of Advisor to the US President, Ivanka Trump, to the city for the Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES).

Currently, there are 55 male beggars and 24 female beggars in shelters provided at the Chanchalguda and Cherlapally Prisons.

Officials said so far 316 male beggars and 164 female beggars had visited the Anand Ashram in Chanchalguda, of which 261 male and 140 female beggars were released after they assured officials that they would not resort to begging again.

VK Singh, Director General of Prisons in a statement said that the department intended to make Hyderabad a beggar free city by December 20. They also intend to declare a reward of Rs 500 for information on beggars on the eve of Christmas on December 25.
