Minister P Ajay Kumar addresses a public meeting in Kothagudem on Thursday.

Kothagudem: The State government was committed to develop Bhadradri Kothagudem district, Transport Minister P Ajay Kumar said on Thursday.

Addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone for a Road over Bridge (RoB) near Sarvaram and various development works in Sujatha Nagar and Kothagudem mandals here, he said efforts were underway for all round progress of the district. Kothagudem MLA Vanama Venkateswar Rao has been making efforts to develop the district headquarters as a model town with all amenities, he added.

Ajay Kumar assured that a junior college at Sujatha Nagar would be established in response to a request by the MLA. He appreciated the MLA, officials and public in the district for their efforts in containing the spread of coronavirus.

Later in the day, addressing a press conference at the MLA’s camp office, the Minister said Sita Rama Lift Irrigation Project (SRLIP) was aimed to utilise river Godavari waters in an effective manner. The project would meet irrigation needs of farmers in erstwhile Khammam. The project was expected to be completed next year. As many as six lakh acres would be irrigated under the project and it would be the second biggest project taken up by the government after Kaleswaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, Ajay Kumar explained.

Previous governments in undivided Andhra Pradesh had wasted nearly Rs 2,400 crore of public money in the name of Rajiv Sagar project, which was found to be useless for the region. That was why the SRLIP was taken up in its place, he said.

A barrage costing Rs 2,700 crore would come up at Dummugudem along with 350 MW power plant. Similarly 1,040 MW power plant in Pinapaka mandal would enhance Telangana’s power generation capacity, the Minister noted.
