Hyderabad: The Election Commission of India will release the electoral list of voters in Telangana on October 12. The decision was taken following the orders from the Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday permitting the EC to publish the revised electoral rolls. The court observed that any objections on the voters list could be raised later too.
The court’s direction came after completion of hearing on a Public Interest litigation (PIL) filed on the issue. Another petition on electoral rolls filed by senior Congress leader Marri Shashidhar Reddy was postponed for hearing on October 12.
A two-judge Bench of the High Court at Hyderabad comprising Chief Justice TBN Radhakrishnan and Justice SV Bhatt directed the EC to place on record an affidavit detailing the modality of date scheduled for rectification and updating of voters list. The Bench was dealing with a PIL filed by Shashidhar Reddy alleging large scale discrepancies in the State electoral rolls.
The EC authorities stated that the electoral roll to be published on October 12 is only a draft list which will be continuously updated as and when a voter files any claim or objection which can be filed till 3 pm on November 19, the last date of filing of nomination.
Meanwhile, Chief Electoral Officer Rajath Kumar told mediapersons that the EC received about 33.14 lakh objections and representations on the draft electoral list of which 22.36 applications were for issuing new voter identity cards. As on Wednesday, the EC cleared about 30 lakh applications. The existing electoral rolls comprise about 2.61 crore voters and another 20 lakh voters are expected to get enrolled in the list.
