Karimnagar: Huzurabad MLA and former Minister Etela Rajender wanted the BC Welfare Department to shift Jammikunta Welfare Hostel for boys immediately to a rented building with better amenities. He paid a surprise visit to the hostel following protests by the inmates over poor facilities and the quality of food being served.

He pulled up the hostel warden and other officials responsible for its upkeep of the building. He sought to know from them whether they would prefer to have their own children stay in such conditions. He said he would have got new toilets and bathrooms constructed in the hostel had he been informed in advance about the conditions. He also sounded a warning to the warden who failed to respond to the situation despite representations from the student organisations.

District BC Welfare Officer J Rangareddy also rushed to the hostel on a stock-taking mission and had a thorough interaction with the inmates on their problems. Students informed the officer that warden and hostel staff frequently quarrelled with each other and threatened the inmates to close the hostel if they took up issues with the higher-ups in the department.

BC leader K Sridhar Raju faulted welfare officials for not responding even after some students stopped taking food in hostel mess.
