Mancherial: In a kind gesture, members of a voluntary organisation and Facebook users together came to the rescue of an economically backward family by sponsoring them a permanent shelter.

They came forward to lend a helping hand up on learning that the family’s hut, groceries and household articles were burnt in a fire accident a few months ago.

Ramesh, a social activist of temple town Dharmpuri in Jagtial district said, after narrating the dire straits of the family on his FB wall, he could raise Rs 65,000 with the help of some Facebook users, belonging to both Telangana and Andhra Pradhesh, to provide a shelter to Borlakunta Venkati and Padma from Thimmapur village in Jannaram mandal. Their hut was reduced to ashes in the fire accident in January last. They have three daughters.

He stated that Sarpanch of Thimmapur D Venkataswamy and members of Shivaji Youth, a voluntary organisation, also contributed Rs 90,000 for building a house for the hapless couple.

“A sum of Rs 1.25 lakh was spent on the iron-sheet roofed home and the remaining amount was deposited in the name of Padma in a bank. Arrangements are being made for inaugurating the shelter on December 17, by inviting a top police official or Collector of the district,” Ramesh told Telangana Today.

The activist further said they wanted to bring respite to the financially weak family, which was leading a pathetic life following the fire mishap. He thanked those who voluntarily responded to his post and donated funds for the kind gesture. He expressed gratitude to Venkataswamy and members of Shivaji Youth for extending their cooperation to the noble deed.
