Hyderabad: An elderly couple died while their son and daughter are battling for life after what appears to be a group suicide bid in their house at DD Colony in Amberpet on Thursday morning. They are suspected to have mixed an overdose of sedatives in soft drinks and attempted suicide, police said.
The couple was identified as Pawan (65) and Neelam (55), while their children were Mannu (34) and Nikhal (30). According to the police, Neelam was suffering from a chronic illness for long. Various treatments did not help her condition improve. Pawan too had age-related health issues. The family was believed to have had financial problems over which they were depressed.
Police suspect that the four attempted suicide in a single room in their house early on Thursday. The incident came to light around 10 am when Neelam’s brother reached the house to visit them. “He knocked on the door and grew suspicious when there was no response from inside. He informed the police on Dial 100. We reached the spot immediately and forcibly opened the door. The parents were already dead by then,” police said, adding that Mannu and Nikhal were rushed to the Andhra Mahila Sabha hospital. Their condition is critical, the police said.
The Amberpet police registered a case. The bodies were shifted to Gandhi Hospital for a post-mortem examination and were later handed over to relatives. Officials said more details, including the actual cause of death, would be revealed in the autopsy report.
