The White House is caught in a wave of tremors triggered by explosive contents of a book “Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House” by journalist and author Michael Wolff. A full-blown crisis is staring at President Donald Trump who has been portrayed in the book as a clueless, confused and ignorant candidate in the presidential race and was a butt of ridicule even by his own close aides. Based on over 200 interviews with members of Team Trump, the book makes some astonishing claims. Among them is the revelation by several of his key aides that Trump was in fact never interested in winning the Presidential election but ran the race because it would make him “both insanely famous and a martyr to Crooked Hillary.” When the results came in, Trump and his family members were genuinely shocked. Trump was completely unprepared for office because he was ill-informed and disinterested. The fallout of the publication of the book has been devastating with Washington watchers predicting an adverse impact on Trump’s presidency and reputation of his family members. At the centre of the bitter row is Trump’s former aide and chief strategist Steve Bannon who made stunning accusations in the interview with the author while lampooning his former boss. Never before in the American history was there such a bewildering spectacle where an incumbent President trades charges with his former chief strategist and even threatens to sue him.

Bannon, seen as Trump’s alter-ego, was the chief executive of the Trump campaign in the last lap for three months and then White House chief strategist for seven months before being sacked. The scathing and unflattering account he portrayed of Trump is going to haunt the President for a long time. The most worrying part of the claim was that Trump’s son Donald Trump Jr and son-in-law Jared Kusher had committed grave error by meeting Russian interlocutors at the height of the Presidential campaign and the meeting was in fact an act of treason. Bannon, the editor of the right wing news website ‘Breitbart News’, even predicted that the FBI, currently probing the alleged collusion between Trump’s team members and the Kremlin, would eventually nail the President’s family members. If that happens, it may well be the end of road for Trump, a maverick Republican whose meteoric political rise had defied all media calculations. The investigation into the Russian meddling in the 2016 election has already led to indictment of four members of Trump’s inner circle. Bannon also spoke about the possibility of Trump either being impeached or removed under the Constitution’s 25th Amendment that authorises the US Legislative bodies to remove the occupant of the White House for mental incapacity.
