Hyderabad: The BJP on Friday claimed credit for “forcing the government” to allow its September 17 Liberation Day celebrations.
A meeting of senior party leaders, including State BJP president Dr K Laxman, former Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao, BJP national executive member N Indrasena Reddy and party spokespersons, “came to the conclusion” that pressure from the BJP “forced Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao to thaw his earlier aggressive stand on September 17 which prohibited rallies, processions and large gatherings to the current ‘free-for-all’ position, to celebrate the historic milestone.”
The Chief Minister had announced in the Assembly that the State government had no objections to anyone celebrating the day. The government, he said, however, would stay away from any official celebrations as the considered view arrived at after widespread consultations was that such a move could result in reopening of old wounds.
The meeting also hoped that by next year, the BJP would be able to build enough pressure on the Chief Minister to declare September 17 as ‘Telangana Liberation Day’.
