Peddapalli: The fossils of an elephant including tusks were found in Medipalli opencast mine of Singareni Collieries Company Limited.
The fossils were found at 20 metre depth while workers were excavating earth for coal in the newly started extension block of Medipalli opencast mine on June 30. The exploration team of Singareni confirmed that they were elephant tusks.
While one tusk was 1.17 metres in length, another was 1.50 metres. Besides tusks, the jaws of an elephant were also found in the same spot. They were shifted to the explorations department. Details of the findings including photographs have been sent to Delhi archaeology department to get more clarity.
Flora and fauna are believed to have been submerged due to a catastrophe that hit the area some 200 to 300 million years ago. It is believed that the fossils belong to that period.
