Hyderabad: Four youngsters, including an engineering student, died on the spot after the Mahindra XUV 500 vehicle in which they were travelling turned turtle on a service road of the Outer Ring Road (ORR) at Sharmipet on Sunday afternoon.

The SUV somersaulted several times before coming to a halt in the bushes over 400 metres away from the road. Such was the impact that the vehicle was completely mangled.

Engineering student Vignesh, along with his friends Rahul, Mario and Harminder Singh were coming from Kandlaykoya village towards Shamirpet to meet their friends who were waiting at a ‘dabha’ in Shamirpet to have food when the accident occurred. The driver apparently failed to notice a sharp curve on the ORR service and lost control of the vehicle.

“We are not sure whether the driver applied sudden brakes or pressed the accelerator at the curve. The white SUV flung into the air and fell on the left side of the road, somersaulted four or five times and got dragged for over 400 metres,” Shamirpet Sub-Inspector K. Chandrasekhar Reddy said.

Two persons were flung out of the car due from the impact when the vehicle overturned. “We had to struggle to pull out the body from the driver’s seat,” he said. “It is one of the ghastly road accidents which we witnessed in the recent past,” a police official said. The deceased aged between 18 and 21 years were residents of Secunderabad, the police said. The bodies were shifted to Gandhi hospital mortuary for autopsy.
