Nalgonda: Proving the saying, ‘a friend in need is a friend indeed’, some of the friends of a differently-abled youth from Yarragaddagudem village of Thipparthy in Nalgonda district came to his aid when he needed it most.

T Nagi Reddy, who is in his mid-thirties, was struggling to find a job after completing his MA and BEd. After knowing his pathetic condition, several of his friends, who had settled in their respective careers in government and private sectors, raised Rs 3.34 lakh to help Nagi Reddy.

Nagi Reddy, who is the seventh among eight children to his parents, has no ancestral property to fall back on. While his father passed away some five years ago, his 75-year-old mother is bedridden. He married a differently-abled woman, Padma, a native of Kannekal village.

The couple gets Aasara pension, and they live in a rented single room in Nalgonda town for the past couple of years. Padma conceived and their hardships multiplied as they could not meet medical expenses. On coming to know about their difficulties, about 50 friends from his village, who live in Hyderabad and other parts of the State, decided to support the couple and help them to overcome the hardships. They created a WhatsApp group “Support Nagi Reddy” and made all his close friends members of the group.

With the help of a donor, the friends got the couple a three-wheeled motorcycle initially. Later, they started mobilising funds among themselves, and collectively raised over Rs 3.34 lakh. Motivated by their gesture, the village sarpanch Y Sailaja Sathish Reddy and vice-MPP, A Venkat Reddy donated Rs 5,000 each taking the total to Rs 3.44 lakh and assured to extend all support to the disabled couple in the future too.

The friends handed over the cash and presented new clothes to the couple on Sunday at Grama Panchayat office. While the sarpanch and vice-MPP appreciated their efforts, Nagi Reddy turned emotional describing his friends as God’s gift.

Speaking to Telangana Today, one of his friends Jeedipally Venkat Reddy said they wanted to see Nagi Reddy lead a respectful life like all of them, and thus decided to help him.

Another friend A Vasukiran Reddy said they will approach the District Collector and Nalgonda MLA and request them to allot a double bedroom house for the couple besides helping Nagi Reddy find a job.
