Hyderabad: Is it possible to treat Covid-19 positive patients who are aged 0 and 99 years in a hospital? The doctors at Gandhi Hospital believe they can!

Despite the general advisory that elderly persons above the age of 60 years fall under high risk category for Covid-19 and usually struggle to recover from Covid-19 infection, the doctors at State-run Gandhi hospital have successfully helped a 94-year-old freedom fighter and a days-old-infant who is yet to be given a name, recover and get discharged from the hospital.

“We are treating Covid-19 positive patients from 0 to 99 years. Many have recovered and went home completely recovered. A days-old infant has recovered and was discharged while 94-year-old freedom fighter has also recovered. Having a positive attitude and willing to put up a fight without panicking is a must to fight the ailment. We counselled the parents of the infant to remain positive and never give up,” Gandhi Hospital Superintendent, Dr M Raja Rao, said.

With the help of the hospital doctors, the 94 year-old freedom fighter from Amberpet, Soma Janardhan fought-back and recovered from the highly contagious SARS-CoV-2. Janardhan in a video thanked the doctors at Gandhi Hospital for taking care of him and motivating him to fight the disease.

“Although my infection was mild, doctors at the hospital encouraged me to remain positive and never give up. They were very courteous and took good care of me.” Soma Janardhan in the video said.

The freedom fighter, who has Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) health insurance coverage, developed a fever and cough in the first week of June. “I visited a private hospital and they referred me to Gandhi Hospital. The test results at Gandhi Hospital came positive and they said I had mild Covid-19 symptoms. I was admitted for 14 days and got discharged on June 22,” he said.

The food and visits by the doctors to the patients’ bed-side at Gandhi Hospital were like clockwork, Janardhan said.

“At 7 am, we used to get milk and biscuits and by 9 am we used to get breakfast. At around 11 am, the hospital used to provide another round of milk and biscuits. By 1 pm they served us lunch with an egg and a banana. In the evening, we used to get snacks at 5 pm and by 7 pm or 8 pm, dinner used to be served,” he said.

Janardhan pointed out that after his discharge he has been taking all precautions like wearing a mask and washing hands soap and alcohol-based sanitiser and maintaining distance from others.

Staff was systematic, says patient

“I was suffering from fever that was refusing to reduce, despite taking treatment at a private hospital near my residence. I had doubts and visited Gandhi Hospital where the doctors conducted Covid-19 tests and the results were positive. I have recovered successfully after ten days of treatment at Gandhi Hospital. The doctors and nurses were very systematic at Gandhi Hospital. Due to my condition, I never felt like eating. However, they kept providing us food and snacks on time and insisted that I eat so that my immunity improves. Unnecessarily, a perception has been created that there is no proper treatment at Gandhi Hospital. I have recovered only because of the doctors and other health care workers at Gandhi Hospital.”
