Gemopai Electric plans unit in south

Hyderabad: Electric two-wheeler maker Gemopai Electric is planning to set up a manufacturing unit in south next year. The company is working on this plan, and is scouting for a suitable site in Telangana, AP and Karnataka.

Amit Raj Singh, co-founder & MD, Gemopai Electric, told Telangana Today, “The company could create a 5 lakh unit per annum capacity plant by end of 2020. The facility could come up with an investment of $10-15 million (Rs 70-105 crore). We are in talks with our Chinese partner, Opai Electric, for funding the plant.”

Gemopai is a joint venture between Goreen E-Mobility founded by Amit Raj Singh, Bhanu Kumar and Kshitij Kumar and China-based Opai Electric, which is one of the largest manufacturers of electric vehicles in the world.

Opai has 20 years’ experience in manufacturing electric two-wheelers, having sold more than 15 million electric two-wheelers worldwide. The company which is ranked fourth in China sells about 2.5 million vehicles each year. Goreen E-Mobility and Opai have signed a memorandum of understanding for joint venture involving technology transfer and cooperation for further developing electric two wheeler models for the Indian market.

Singh said, “We have customised the vehicles to Indian road conditions, users and the climate. The main components are coming from China and Gemopai has localised the production to about 60 per cent. We are looking at 100 per cent localisation in the next 6-8 months from now. We currently have a plant in Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh with an annual capacity of 1.5 lakh units. We want to scale up our production with the new facility in south.”

The company sells its electric vehicles under the brand name ‘Ryder’ at present. It plans to come out with more models by the end of August, including a high speed vehicle. All the scooters are powered by removable Li-ion battery, which weight about 6.5 kg-9kg. The company expects to launch an advanced version of Astrid Lite sometime soon, which will compete with the existing electric two-wheelers in the India market.

“Once we take our dealer network from the current 50 (in India and Nepal) to 200 dealers’ pan-India, we plan to create charging stations across our dealer outlets. Our prime focus markets will be south and west in India. In south, we want to have at least 200 touch points in the next one year as this is the region where we have maximum traction. Telangana is a major market for us and we already have six touch points in Hyderabad and we want to take this to 10 by this Diwali. We will make sure that we provide best after-sales service in the category,” he informed.

The company is planning to expand its dealer network from one to six in Nepal and also foray into neighbouring countries such as Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar in the next one year and Africa in the next three years.

On the tax structure, Singh said, “With the steps the Central government has taken, we expect the orders to go up. We seek State government level support in all the States where we are going to sell our products.”

Gemopai sees a gradual shift in demand from internal combustion engine (ICE)-based vehicles to electric two-wheelers.

In terms of innovation, he says, “We are going to power our scooters with internet of things (IoT), which will be app-enabled and all the data on usage patterns will come on cloud giving useful insights.”
