Hyderabad: With Diwali deadline fast approaching, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has intensified its efforts to replace the city streetlights with LED bulbs instead of the conventional bulbs.
The civic body which has a target of installing 4.50 lakh LED streetlights has crossed the 2 lakh mark. Each day, various teams are busy setting up nearly 8,000 streetlights across the city.
GHMC is the first municipal corporation in the country to take up the mammoth task of replacing conventional streetlight bulbs with LED bulbs. The project has been taken up in coordination with Energy Efficiency Services Limited (ESSL).
The civic body is not investing any money in the project. ESSL will be maintaining the streetlights for seven years as per the terms and conditions.
With the installation of 2 lakh new LEDs streetlights, nearly 7000 kw of power was being saved, GHMC officials said. Each unit costs about Rs 7.
