GHMC issues orders banning excavation of cellars

In case where the cellar works were in initial stage, officials have been instructed to stop the works immediately.

Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has issued orders banning excavation of cellars in the city for next three months of monsoon.

Two workers died and two others were injured in March early this year at a site where a cellar was being constructed in Kondapur. Given this, the GHMC on Sunday directed the town planning section not to permit any cellar excavation works this season.

The Assistant City Planners and other officials have also been directed to visit all the sites where cellars have been permitted earlier to ensure safety of the workers and neighbouring structures. 

In case where the cellar works were in initial stage, officials have been instructed to stop the works immediately. At sites, where the works have already been taken up, officials were directed to check and ensure that soil strengthening and structural stability of retaining walls as per the standards.

Further, officials were directed to inspect dilapidated structures and issue notices to owners. They have been directed to initiate measures to vacate occupants living in dilapidated structures, besides pasting caution notices on the structures.

This special drive is to continue till the end of monsoon and officials have been warned of serious action in case of any complacency or negligence in implementing the orders.
