Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) which has taken up an exercise of identifying encroachments along the nalas crisscrossing the city has identified 9,473 encroachments so far.

For the purpose, the civic body teams, which took up a survey of more than 390 km nala length in the city has already covered around 263 kms, according to a press release. Illegal structures that cause obstruction to the free flow in the nalas were found to be a major problem during the heavy rains, resulting in the inundation of streets and residential areas.”The identified 9,473 structures are encroaching 92 major nalas across the city,” the civic body said.

According to officials, the survey of remaining 127 kilometres of naala stretch would be completed in the next few days.

During the course of the survey, north and central zones of the civic body emerged as the regions with largest number of illegal structures over the naalas. Of the encroachments identified so far, two zones have close to 5,000 structures.

The authorities have already geo-tagged 98 naalas in various parts of the city and have sent the data for further analysis to Telangana Remote Sensing Application Centre (TRAC). The GHMC is expected to take a decision on demolition of the illegal structures which are encroaching the nalas.
