Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) suspended 12 assistant engineers, including three women, for their alleged involvement in irregularities of processing fabricated weighbridge bills to the tune of Rs 1.10 crore.
GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy issued suspension orders on Saturday, a day after the Central Crime Station arrested them on Friday.
Last week, the police arrested a few contractors in connection with the same case. The irregularities were detected by audit wing of GHMC’s Central Zone, when officials scrutinised the bills of Rs 1.10 crore produced by the contractors for drain de-silting works.
As per rules, contractors have to produce weighbridge bills for transporting silt removed from drains to dumpyard. But in this case, when the contractors submitted the bills for 2016-17 in March, the audit wing found these to be false.
Higher authorities said disciplinary action will be initiated against the engineers. Meanwhile, engineers of the civic body staged a demonstration at the head office on Saturday, protesting against the police action. They wanted it to conduct a thorough enquiry before arresting the officials. The 12 assistant engineers were released on bail the same day.
