Hyderabad: Their nimble hands are busy for a cause during the lockdown.
As part of the ongoing Haritha Haram programme, several school students in Narayanpet these days are engaged in making seed balls to be handed over to the Forest Department for spraying.
The local district education department has come up with the initiative under the motto ‘Teach a child greening and you make a generation conscious to preserve environment’.
Both private and government school students are actively participating in the exercise. As they cannot go out and take up plantations due to Covid restrictions, they are helping make seed balls and increasing the green cover, said District Collector Dasari Harichandana.
Eleven lakh seed balls have been prepared by school students in the district. To make the exercise more interesting for the students, teachers have made it as a science project for them and each student has to make a minimum of 10 balls. “Impressed with the work, many students are making many more seed balls,” she said.
In all, 3,400 students and 1,825 teachers from all mandals are participating in the initiative. Teachers are also extending their support as each one is preparing about 350 per head, she added.
