Hyderabad: Reporters are usually behind news, not the news. But Tahera Rahman, a 27 year-old story-teller and journalist, has now become news after she became the first headscarf-donned woman in the history of America to become a full-time TV news reporter for a local news channel.
According to news reports on her achievement, which are now going viral all over the internet, Rahman had always nurtured the dream of becoming a TV reporter. She did internships with several organizations and also worked behind the camera as a producer.
Being raised in the post 9/11 era, her dream of becoming a TV journalist was considered extremely difficult or unreal. Her mentors or even the people around would tell her that it was unlikely for a woman to report news on TV with her headgear. She received many rejections, yet that didn’t break her hope, the reports said.
After years of struggle, Local 4 News, the CBS affiliate for the Quad Cities region on the Illinois-Iowa border, agreed to recognize her as a full-time TV news reporter for their channel. And now, with her dream coming true, she is basking in the attention that is coming in from across the globe. Support, both directly and online, is pouring in.
A Twitter user wrote,
“This Muslim sister is the first reporter to wear hijab on American television. Congratulations and thank you, Tahera Rahman, for opening doors and opening minds.
