Hyderabad: This is one department in the Osmania University that goes much beyond academics and plays a major role in keeping many in the city and beyond, healthy mentally.

Department of Psychology in the 100-year-old university, is perhaps one that has the most outreach programmes here. From workshops in counselling, personality development and career choices, to programmes on suicide prevention, building self-esteem and other social outreach programmes – the department is an inseparable part of the city.

The department, established by EG Parameshwaran in 1969, is considered as one of the best departments in psychology in this part of the country.

“The Department has been working on child development, organisational behaviour and health psychology in diverse manners,” said Anupama Anaparti, chairperson, Board of Students, Psychology Department.

The department has conducted research projects on Cognitive Psychology at the National Remote Sensing Centre as part of ISRO’s Respond programme. This included an analysis of positioning errors in GPS ground control surveys from a cognitive psychology perspective.

Sahayam, a counselling centre of the department and led by C Beena, promotes psychological, educational and social well-being of the students. This is apart from workshops and programmes in several city schools and even in the British Library.

The library of the Department has over 2,000 books related to emotions, developmental psychology, medical, abnormal psychology, organisational behaviour, psycho-analysis and so on. A Cognitive Psychology laboratory and Psychological Testing Laboratory too are part of its assets.
