Hyderabad: With the clock ticking for the launch of metro rail services in the city, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) is awaiting the nod from Central government for operating electric buses and vehicles as feeder services from colonies to stations.

HMRL would provide electric vehicles, besides feeder buses for feeder trips by having sufficient electric vehicles (customised autos and mini buses) at all the stations. The stations will be equipped with all facilities for charging the vehicles, replacing the used batteries with recharged batteries etc.

As the prime objective of HMR is to promote public transportation, focus is being laid on offering quality and comfortable transportation to the passengers. This includes connectivity from colonies to the stations. Since not many city buses are operated from colonies to the main roads, these electric vehicles will ensure last mile connectivity. The objective is to stop people from using private vehicles. Apart from being affordable in terms of fare, these electric vehicles come with multiple benefits, said HMRL Managing Director N V S Reddy. Accordingly, HMRL is awaiting the nod from Central Institute of Road Transport, Pune to operate the electric vehicles, he said.

Already, a private company has approached with prototypes of the electric vehicles (customized autos). The HMRL is also exploring the possibilities of introducing 15 to 20 seater capacity mini electric buses. All efforts are being made to operate a few electric vehicles during the inauguration of the metro rail services during the last week of November, he said.

“Electric vehicles fleet will be augmented in tune with the demand. In the coming days, the demand for electric vehicles will go up considerably,” said Reddy. HMR authorities are laying emphasis on provision of multiple eco-friendly facilities for passengers at the stations. In addition to the electric vehicles, there will be sufficient bicycles. About 10,000 cycles will be provided at 400 bike stations.
