Hyderabad: Cons elderly woman to sustain hobbies

He introduces himself as friend of their son or son-in-law and ask them to show their gold jewellery

Hyderabad: A 30-year-old lorry driver, who was into stealing gold and cash to sustain his hobbies of betting in horse races and cricket matches, apart from gambling and cock fights, was arrested here on Friday.

According to the police, Vadapalli Rajesh alias Nani hailing of Gollapudi in Ibrahimpatnam of Vijayawada was addicted to betting on horse races and cricket matches apart from cock fighting and gambling. However, with huge money required to sustain these ‘hobbies’, he turned to crime in 2008. Rajesh used to scout residential localities and identify houses were elderly women lived alone. He would then approach them, introducing himself as friend of their son or son-in-law and gradually ask them to show their gold jewellery.

Once he convinced them and they showed him their jewellery, he would divert their attention and escape with the ornaments. Anyone who refused to give their jewellery was attacked, police said, adding that he was caught while moving under suspicious circumstances at Vengalrao Nagar here.

Police inquiries revealed that Rajesh was involved in more than 20 cases in Vuyyuru, Krishnalanka, Kanchikacherla and Nandigama near Vijayawada. He was also involved in cases registered in Repalle and Tenali in Guntur district, Guntur, Suryapet and Kodada in Nalgonda. He was nabbed by the Tenali police in December last and released on bail in January. He then came to Hyderabad and committed three offences, police said.

Three non-bailable warrants are also pending against him at Vuyyuru, Krishnalanka and Nandigama police stations, police said.
