Hyderabad couple held for conducting sex-determination test

Hyderabad: The Medipally police arrested a couple on charges of illegally conducting prenatal sex-determination test at Venkateswara Diagnostic Centre at Buddha Nagar in Peerzadiguda here late on Thursday. Officials said they were caught during a decoy operation. The arrested were identified as C Vijaya Kumar (34), a lab technician and his wife C Swathi (33) a Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery (BAMS) doctor.

Following a tip-off, the police team conducted a decoy operation along with a woman police constable who was pregnant. The couple conducted a test on her and other women who were present there in violation of rules. Further enquiry revealed that the couple has been conducting these tests for the last one year. A case for cheating under the Indian Penal Code and relevant sections of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act 1994 was booked against them. They were produced before the court which further remanded them in judicial custody.
