Hyderabad: A four year-old girl got a new lease of a life on Sunday after personnel of the Telangana State Emergency Services rescued her from a 12 feet deep drain into which she slipped and fell at Gowliguda.
Divya along with her friends was playing near Gowliguda BSNL office around 10 am when she slipped into the improperly covered drain. On getting the information about the incident, the girl’s parents, Chandrakanth and Bharathi rushed to the spot but were not able to do anything.
“A civilian came to our fire station and informed about the incident. We were in the rest room and all of us immediately rushed to the spot. After studying the situation, our personnel got a big ladder from the station,” said fireman Kranti Kumar, who supervised the rescue operation.
The opening of the manhole was narrow and they had to ensure that the ladder was placed without causing any hurt to the girl inside. The light inside the drain was low and visibility was poor.
“We asked the parents to keep talking to the child from outside and engage her. I got inside the drain and pulled her out,” Kranti said.
After bringing out the girl, to the applause of a huge crowd that assembled at the place, the firemen took the girl to the station where while the girl’s mother gave her a bath, the firemen got a new dress for Divya. The parents were not able to stop thanking the fire team.
Kranti said the child was very lucky as the nala during rains brims and connects the area of Begum Bazaar with the Musi River at Chaderghat.
“I am getting calls from senior officials and also from the public. I feel I have served the department in the right spirit for this is what we are trained for,” Kranthi said.
