Hyderabad: The city police on Friday arrested three women for allegedly selling a three-month-old infant for Rs.10,000. The arrested included the child’s mother.
Police, identifying the women as G Kavitha (19), M Sumalatha (70) and T Anjali (30), said the shocking deal came to light after the father of the child came to know of the incident and approached the police.
Police said Kavitha, wife of Raju, both residents of Secunderabad, had delivered the baby boy three months ago. Raju, a construction labourer, was out of station frequently on work, and recently, when he was away, Kavitha met Sumalatha. When she narrated her story of hardships and financial constraints, Sumalatha put forth the proposal that she would pay Kavitha Rs.10,000 if she was ready to sell the baby.
The two then went to Bellampally and met Sumalatha’s distant relative, Anjali, who was childless even after 12 years of marriage. The deal was struck and the baby was handed over. However, the secret was out soon after Raju returned and found his son missing. On questioning, Kavitha confessed that she had sold their child to a couple in Bellampally, said T Laxmi Narayana, Inspector, Tukaramgate.
Based on a complaint lodged by Raju, police registered a case under Section 23 and 81 of the Juvenile Justice Act (JJA) and retrieved the baby from Anjali’s house on Friday morning. The women were produced before court after and later remanded in judicial custody.
