Hyderabad: The Prohibition and Excise Department personnel raided a cotton field at Jaffernagar in Parigi on the city suburbs and seized 12 marijuana plants.

The land owner, Kosgi Surya Prakash (45), who was cultivating the plants, was arrested and a case under the provisions of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act was registered against him. Prakash was remanded in judicial custody.

Officials said Prakash felt that no one would enter the field to check marijuana plants cultivated in the cotton field. However, acting on information, an Excise team conducted searches in the field and found the 4.5-foot high plants at different places in the two acre-plot.

“The plants were ready to sell after drying it up for a few days,” Parigi Excise Inspector Sekhar said.

Inquires revealed that Prakash was arrested last year on charges of possessing marijuana. After being released on bail, he started cultivating ganja. The department was yet to collect more information about buyers of marijuana from Prakash, Sekhar added.
