Hyderabad: Hyderabadis welcomed Metro Rail with open arms on Wednesday and the response to the first day services far exceeded the expectations of all.
The response has been phenomenal and no other metro received such response on the inaugural day. By 10 pm, nearly one lakh passengers are expected to travel in metro trains and it is a record for the inaugural day any metro recorded in the country, said Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited Managing Director NVS Reddy.
L&T Metro Rail Hyderabad – the concessionaire for HMR too thanked Hyderabadis for the overwhelming response. “We are encouraged to serve better day by day,” the company said in a statement.
Since morning there was heavy rush at Miyapur, Ameerpet and Nagole stations. Unlike other Metro Rail services, which had many boarding for joy rides and taking selfies, many Hyderabadis also got onto to the Metro to reach their workplaces and other destinations. Nearly 80 per cent boarded the metro to reach their offices and other works, said Reddy.
A few passengers were caught for travelling in the trains beyond the stations, for which they had purchased tickets. Though, they were let off on the day one, this practice would not be permitted henceforth, he said.
Regarding parking facilities, of the 24 stations, 12 stations would have regulated parking space in a fortnight. Parking fee was yet to be finalised and special agencies would be hired to monitor the parking lots, he said.
Except for minor glitches, the operations on the inaugural day went off very well. On the inaugural day in other cities, metro trains developed snags and doors did not open in other cases, he said.
There were apprehensions over passengers getting used to the automatic fare collection but Hyderabadis proved yet again that they were well versed with technology, said the HMR MD.
Dismissing the allegations of violations in fare fixations as per agreement, he explained that initially Hyderabad Metro was registered under AP Tram Act.
In 2014, the Central Government introduced the Central Metro Act and HMR was registered as per the new act. As per the rules, the Concessionaire was responsible for fixing the fares, he added.
