Hyderabad: One person was killed while three others were injured when a gas cylinder exploded at a scrap godown at Thirkapally in Karwan on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred when they were trying to segregate scrap, police said.
Rama Krishna alias Vinod, 55, who was injured in the cylinder explosion at Kulsumpura succumbed to burns at the Osmania General Hospital later in the evening on Tuesday, while Ashok, who suffered serious injuries, is under treatment. His condition was stated to be stable. Two others who sustained minor injuries, Raju and Chotu, were treated as outpatients at the hospital. They were given first aid and let off, police said.
According to the police, the scrap shop situated opposite to SBA Garden was functioning for the last two years. On Tuesday morning the four laborers were working in the unit when the mishap occurred.
“The workers usually segregate iron and various other metal waste in the go-down, before dispatching these to other places. They use a hammer or other tools to crush metal objects,” police said. Around 11.30am, during the process of segregating, they tried to open a small gas cylinder present in the scrap, resulting in the explosion.
Police said they suspect the small gas cylinder, which was the size of a softdrink bottle, was from a refrigerator. The explosion occurred when they tried to separate the copper cover of the cylinder using a heavy tool.
Locals alerted the police who rushed to the spot and shifted the injured to the Osmania General Hospital. The CLUES Team too reached the spot and collected samples from the blast site. A case was booked and is being investigated.
