Hyderabad: The Osmania University (OU) will hold its 80th convocation on June 17. The convocation is being held for the first time since the formation of Telangana State and it is after six years with the last one conducted in February 2013.
Governor and OU Chancellor ESL Narasimhan, and Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Director, S Chandrasekhar are slated to take part in the event which will be held at Tagore Auditorium. Chandrasekhar who is an alumnus of OU in the Department of Chemistry will deliver the convocation address and confer the degrees.
As many as 2,896 scholars were declared eligible for PhD degrees. Out of the total, 1,800 have already taken their PhD degrees in absentia. About 300 candidates will receive gold medals during convocation ceremony.
Given the huge number of eligible candidates, the OU has decided to confer PhD degrees on scholars in person while the rest will be given in absentia.
“Several PhD holders have already taken their degrees. We are making arrangements for all the eligible PhD holders. As last convocation was held in February 2013, huge number of gold medals has piled up. This time, all the gold medals will be presented and from the next year the convocation ceremony will be streamlined,” Prof S Ramachandram, Vice-Chancellor, OU told Telangana Today.
Online confirmation is being taken from students to ascertain number of participants in the convocation, the VC said, adding that seating arrangement will also be provided to students online.
“Tagore auditorium has capacity for 1,500 persons and additional 300 chairs can be arranged. Students have to sit according to their seat arrangement provided to them online,” the VC said.
Meanwhile, the varsity has invited online applications for conferment of degrees on successful candidates in the examinations from July 2012 to June 2018. The PhD degrees awarded up to June 11, 2019 will also be considered.
Eligible candidates can register through the website www.osmania.ac.in and pay the fee online from May 16. The last date for submission of online applications for PhD candidates is June 11 and for candidates of PG/UG/Dip./M.Phil programmes (including those offered by autonomous colleges and PGRRCDE) it is May 31.
The candidates who have already taken their degree certificates, in absentia, are not eligible to apply. If they do so, the fee paid will not be refunded, the university said, adding that gold medals in undergraduate degree courses will be awarded to students at their respective colleges after the convocation.
