Hyderabad: The Vanasthalipuram police solved the double murder case of a woman and her child, and arrested her husband, an engineering student, here on Wednesday. He suspected her fidelity and killed her, the police said.

The arrested person, Mohammed Abid Alam (27), had met Kavitha alias Saba while he was staying in a rented room in Indranagar Colony of Vanasthalipuram. Alam, a native of Bihar, was an engineering student in a private college in Pochampally and had some backlogs, which he was trying to clear while staying at Vanasthalipuram.

“It was during his stay there that he fell in love with Kavitha who lived in the neighbourhood. As the elders did not agree for their marriage, they eloped and started living together in a rented house,” said Mahesh M Bhagwat, Police Commissioner, Rachakonda. They soon had a son, named Mohammed Irfan.

“Alam soon started suspecting Saba’s fidelity and hence plotted to kill her and Irfan. He wanted to flee to his native place after the murder and re-marry,” Bhagwat said.

As per his plan on April 28, in the absence of co-tenants and the house owner, Alam picked up a fight with Saba and smothered her with a towel. He then throttled her to death with his hands. He later killed his son in the same way before stuffing both bodies in a water drum in the house.
The double murder came to light two days later on April 30 after the neighbours complained of foul smell and alerted the police.

Based on a complaint lodged by Saba’s family, a case was booked and Alam, who had gone absconding, was arrested from Medchal. He was remanded to judicial custody.
