Hyderabad: Roads in some parts of the city have started to sport a new look with markings of zebra crossing, road margin and road-safety related aspects, as the private agencies commenced road maintenance works under the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP).
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has roped in private agencies to take up road maintenance works, including sweeping activity as part of its efforts to ensure pothole-free and blacktop roads apart from clean roads, in the city.
These works will cover 709 km of major road length and other thoroughfares. To begin with, the agencies have commenced initial works such as zebra crossing, road margins etc while Bitumen Plants (BT) for taking up re-carpeting works are being set up in different zones.
Already, a couple of BT plants had been set up at Kukatpally and Secunderabad and other plants were to be ready shortly. “Each zone has one BT plant for executing the road re-carpeting works effectively,” said GHMC Commissioner, DS Lokesh Kumar.
At present, all works related to road safety such as zebra crossing, footpath maintenance etc were underway and it would be followed with road sweeping and sanitation works on the identified roads. These works would commence from next month, he said.
Apart from road works, the agencies would also take up sweeping and sanitation works under CRMP. The sanitary work force which was deployed on 709-km road network would now be deployed in other areas, he said.
Since the 709-km stretch covers major thoroughfares, the sanitary workers would be deployed in colonies to clean internal roads and ensure hygiene and sanitation in internal areas, he added.
It is not just the main carriageway, the agencies would be entrusted with the task of maintaining greenery on medians as well. The total estimated contract value of these works is Rs 1,827 crore and it will be a five-year contract.
